Egyptian chopper enters Israeli airspace - nearly shot down

An Egyptian chopper entered Israeli airspace this evening and was nearly shot down by IAF planes that feared it was heading for a sensitive installation in Dimona.

The planes approached the foreign aircraft after the latter were suspected of heading to the nuclear research plant near Dimona, Channel 2 reported.

The Egyptian helicopter retreated back into the Sinai Peninsula after seeing the IAF jets.

Similar infiltrations reportedly happened at least twice in the past, but Israel did not respond to the potential threat.

According to the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, the Egyptian army may hold up to six unarmed helicopters in the Sinai Peninsula, but they may not enter Israeli territory.
