Abbas sues Palestinian editor for libel

THIS is what he's wasting his time doing? This is a good laugh....

'Palestinian President' Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen has sued Abdel Bari Atwan, editor of the London-based al-Quds al-Arabi for libel in a case filed - no, not in London where they have the most liberal libel laws in the world - but in the Magistrate's Court of the great (not) city of Ramallah. The case was filed by Abbas's sons, Tarek and Yasser.

The court subpoenaed Atwan to appear before it on June 26, 2006, to present his defense. According to the Jerusalem Post, it's not clear at this stage whether Atwan, who lives in London, will comply. Why on earth would he?

According to the Jerusalem Post, the court warned Atwan that he may be charged with contempt of court and subjected to civil penalties if he fails to appear. And just how do they think they are going to enforce that charge or collect those penalties?

In recent months Atwan has repeatedly launched scathing attacks on Abbas, holding him responsible for corruption and anarchy in the PA. In an editorial last March, entitled "Abbas is playing with fire," he urged the PA chairman to resign.

For an example of Atwan's editorials attacking Abu Mazen see here.
