Breaking: Netanyahu - Mitchell meeting canceled

A much anticipated meeting that was to take place in Paris on Thursday between Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and US Middle East envoy George Mitchell has been canceled. At the meeting, the two were to have attempted to reach a compromise on 'settlement expansion.' The official excuse is that both sides need 'more time to prepare.' Instead, Defense Minister Ehud Barak will go to the US on Monday to meet with Mitchell.

My guess is that they are trying to reach an agreed result before they hold a meeting and that they are unable to do so. Given State Department spokesman Ian Kelly's announcement yesterday that the US views Jerusalem as part of the freeze, that's not surprising. It is possible that Kelly's announcement surprised Netanyahu (although I find it hard to believe that Netanyahu did not realize that already).

In any event, I doubt there is any compromise on the horizon.

President Obama is holding a press conference at 12:30 eastern time this afternoon. Here's hoping someone asks him about this.

The US is not ready to find a compromise with Israel. Ehud Barak's disgraceful running off to America to see Mitchell will achieve nothing. And thanks to the Palestinian attitude, the peace process is all but dead. There is no point in Israel expending energy on what is basically a distraction from Iran.

The worst Prime Minister in Israel's history is back in the news, revealing the details of his last best offer to Mahmoud Abbas of the PA:

Olmert Offered To Withdraw From 93% Of The West Bank

If that's not bad enough, he offered, yes - to place Jewish holy sites in Jerusalem under an international condominium.

EWWWW! Excuse me while I throw up!

With Ehud Olmert, there's always a joker in the deck... or a clown in attendance!
