Shalit bill to be advanced as coalition initiative

After months of efforts by MK Danny Danon (Likud), Prime Minister Netanyahu has agreed to discuss the Gilad Shalit bill at next week's Sunday cabinet session with a view to adopting the bill as a coalition initiative (what this means is that it is likely that the entire coalition would vote in favor - and under certain circumstances could be forced to vote in favor - making it likely that the bill would pass). The Gilad Shalit bill would cut back on the ridiculous privileges received by Hamas prisoners until such time as Shalit receives the privileges accorded to prisoners of war under international law. Shalit has been in captivity for nearly four years without so much as a visit from the Red Cross.
The Prime Minister’s Office neither confirmed nor denied that Netanyahu would support the measure. Until now, the government had bowed to what they said were concerns expressed by security officials that any worsening of Hamas prisoners’ conditions could lead to chaos in the prison system.

The bill would reduce to the minimum required by international humanitarian protocols the privileges enjoyed by the Hamas prisoners, who are currently entitled to visits from family members, where as the bill would limit visits to Red Cross observers. Further more, prisoners would no longer be given access to televisions or the Prisons Service’s education program.
This bill is long overdue.

Exactly. There is no reason Hamas prisoners should be given special treatment and Prison Service officials who insist otherwise should be shown the door. If at all possible, Red Cross privileges and family visits should be revoked as well.

Its long overdue indeed.

Ask yourself why do you need any legal legislation to deny any privileges to illegal combatants, who are supposed to only be entitled to a bullet through their skulls as per the Geneva Conventions.

Everything is wrong.

The Red Cross should also be banned from visiting. The rules of war are meant to be reciprocal.

On the Eastern Front, Stalin ordered his troops to follow the rules of war in the beginning. But when he saw that the Nazis had no intention of obeying the rules of war, he allowed his soldiers to ignore them.
