Revenge of the Jews?

Good morning to all of you from the Garden State. Okay, let's see who figures that out (answers only by private email). I'm not going to post too much tonight (it's 1:00 am here) because I have a breakfast meeting in what is referred to in these parts as "the City" tomorrow morning.

In a story that the inimitable Drudge Report is calling "Revenge of the Jews" (see below for screen cap), Republican Bob Turner has beaten Democrat (and Orthodox Jew) David Weprin in a Special Election for the Congressional seat for the 9th District of New York, the seat formerly occupied by Robert Weiner.
Retired media executive and political novice Bob Turner defeated Democratic state Assemblyman David Weprin on Tuesday in the special election to fill the seat vacated by Weiner, a seven-term Democrat who resigned in June.

With more than 80 percent of precincts reporting, Turner had 54 percent of the vote to Weprin's 46 percent in unofficial results.

"We've been asked by the people of this district to send a message to Washington," Turner told supporters after the landmark win. "I hope they hear it loud and clear. We've been told this is a referendum. Mr. President, we are on the wrong track. We have had it with an irresponsible fiscal policy which endangers the entire economy."

Weprin did not immediately concede.

The heavily Democratic district, which spans parts of Queens and Brooklyn, had never sent a Republican to the House. But frustration with the continued weak national economy gave Republicans the edge.
So then why is Drudge calling this "Revenge of the Jews"? Are Walt and Mearsheimer writing his headlines (as one of my lawyer friends quipped in an email)?

Weprin became embroiled in New York-centric disputes over Israel and gay marriage, which cost him some support among Jewish voters.

Orthodox Jews, who tend to be conservative on social issues, expressed anger over Weprin's vote in the Assembly to legalize gay marriage. In July, New York became one of six states to recognize same-sex nuptials.

Former Mayor Ed Koch, a Democrat, endorsed Turner in July as a way to "send a message" to Obama on his policies toward Israel. And Weprin was challenged on his support of a proposed Islamic center and mosque near the World Trade Center site, in lower Manhattan.
Got to save that screen cap for next November. Heh.

And to think I'm pretty sure that Weprin used to pray in the same Mincha service that I did before I made aliya....

Orthodox Jews vote heavily Republican so it didn't exactly come as a shock.

But its a stunning repudiation of Obama in what used to be a heavily Democratic district!

The news heard round the world!

Heh

NormanF, your first sentence is what I will expect to hear from URJ, JCC, etc. as they try to hold their Leftist position. Actually, if that sentence is accurate, then the fact that that district has endlessly voted in the most liberal of liberal dems means that the idea that Orthodox Jews vote conservative is WRONG, in general, isn't it??? It is two competing realities. Which is it?

Also, I've resisted so far, but I think I'll go see how far Charles will go with blasting Jews today. He also has a dissonance going on. I'll check it out.

Liberal urban Jews are the core of Dem support. They are the last voters that would ever defect. BHO is already toast in the heartland.

BH in Iowa: Exageration on your part. The total number of Jews in the U.S. is 6-7 million out of 320+ million total population. So to say "liberal urban Jews are the core of Dem support" means the Dems should always lose everything everywhere. It would be a tiny core.

The reason I bring this up is that false claims of Jews running this, that, or the other thing (the world!) is a classic tennent of the kind of anti-semitism that leads to pogroms, ovens, etc. I know you don't mean it that way, but I hope the Israel Matzav regulars will word things carefully. I would agree with you that the $$donations of Jewish individuals and communal organizations do matter in U.S. politics.

Sunlight, yes I know. I am one of 6100 Jews in my state. My comment was referring to the committment not the size of the group. I don't need to be lectured over basic common knowledge.

BH - You don't need it, but the readers who use any excuse to skapegoat Jews need to be reminded that they are ridiculous when it comes to hyping the Joooos in the U.S. vote count. I just heard on the radio that the Leftists are already sliming the Jews for NY9... (Where I live, we are a smaller number even than where you live... :). If, in fact, the Orthodox are the issue and they already vote conservative, then how on earth can the Left say they are the discriminator in this amazing (D) defeat? It would be the average (D) voters that switched to the (R) candidate, not the Orthodox Jews.

If Israel itself is the issue it's because it hasn't been seen within its larger national security context. Obama's foreign policy has been weak and clueless at best, nefarious at worst.

The bailout and healthcare disasters were huge black eyes. Unemployment remains high as businesses won't hire.

This person came in on a ton of rhetoric and promises and no qualifications or preparation. No surprise he's failed.

The screaming mobs will scream regardless. The leftist blogs didn't just start scapegoating Jews today. The true believers will blame everyone and everything but their guy.
